How the Health of Your Home Affects your Well-Being

You spend approximately 65% of your life in your home, but do you know how your personal living space is affecting your family's health?  There are a few simple changes that you can make to your personal environment that will make you and your family feel just that little bit better.

We live in an age of modern conveniences and there are a huge number of synthetic raw materials used to furnish and decorate our homes. That coupled with the current obsession to be clean , and therefore the over use of highly concentrated cleaning chemicals, means that our houses sometimes contain more pollutants that standing on a busy street corner.

It has been shown that low level exposure to synthetic products found in furnishings, paint, carpets, cleaning products etc we are experiencing general malaise, headaches, insomina, allergies and fatigue that we just assume is part of normal life.  Haven't you found that when you go somewhere that has low chemical pollutants you feel invogorated and have more energy? - No it isn't just because you are holidays.

Most people these days have heard of volatile organic compounds or VOCs.  However we often get confused when the word organic gets thrown around - organic fruit and vege are good for us, so VOCs should be too right? - Wrong!  VOCs are derived from petrochemcials and release vapours at room temperature.  They are found in most synthetic substances incluidng carpets, household paints and cleaning products, bags, synthetic fabrics and pesticides.

Dr Sarah Lantz in her book Chemical Free Kids shows that chemicals mothers have ingested over their life time have been found in the placenta and umbilical blood of their new born baby, plus in the breast milk they feed their child.  These chemicals include polychlorinated bipheyls (PCBs) perfluorinated chemicals (PCFs), phthalates, leads, bisphenol-A (BPA) and pesticides. "The Environmental Working Group (EWG) found on average 200 chemicals  and pollutants in the umbilical cord of 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in US hos;itals" says Dr Lantz.  180 of these chemicals can cause cancer in humans or animals, 208 cause birth defects and 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system.

We also have many more electrical components in our house which contribute to electro-pollution that can add to our stress, contribute to headaches and drain our energy.

I don't want to scare monger however it should be noted that alot of todays products that have been developed to make the house healthier and life easier may be the products that are zapping our health. I will be coming back soon with some healthy house alternatives in the near future but for now before you reach for your usual cleaning products in the supermarket, why not see if there are healthier chemical free alternatives nearby.
