Some home remedies for the common cold

With the cold and flu season approaching I thought I would include some home remedies used at the Sweet Bubba house hold to help fight the common cold.

For the big kids (Sweet Mumma and Sweet Pappa)
  1. I have been squeezing freshly juiced home grown limes into hot water with a teaspoon of organic honey and drinking that.  It is been soothing to a sore throat and great for vitamin C to help fight the cold.
  2. Have some Chinese ginger tea which is apparently really good for a cold as it helps with perspiration to cleanse you and aids in eliminating chills or place some sliced ginger into boiling water and let it seep for 5-10mins.
  3. We do a 10 min inhalation with chamomile tea in boiling water under a hot towel.  While this doesn't clear the sinuses quite as quickly as eucalyptus it does seem to be much more effective and longer lasting.
  4. Have diffused Eucalyptus essential oil, chamomile essential oil, and tea-tree oil into an oil burner and have that going.
  5. Have mixed a small amount of eucalpytus essential oil and tea-tree oil with massage oil and rubbed it on my chest and soles of my feet (you can rub on little ones feet too).
  6. I have also increased zinc supplementation to help boost my immune system, been taking vitamin C to help fight the cold, as it is high in anti-oxidants and boosts my immune system and is also an anti-inflamitory, and will be getting some echincea bought home for me as it is a natural antibiotic and helps support my immune system.

For the little kids (Sweet Bubbas)

  1. Have a vapouriser in the room with eucalyptus oil in it.
  2. Soak a washer in cool water with a couple of drops of lavender essential oil and peppermint essential oil for a soothing compress that can help reduce fevers (wrapped around our sweet bubbas feet).
  3. Cooled lemon or ginger tea sweetened with organic honey.  Used to give through a medicine dropper to Olly when he was between 6 and 12 months.
  4. Plenty of water for older babies, those who are still breastfed plenty of boobie time.

Becareful when using hot waters so not to incur burns. This is article is just a few remedies I have used to help combat the common cold.  It should not be a substitute for medical advice and you should seek information from a professional.
